For those unaware, there was a time when, even as a kid, that area could be punctured with the thumb since it was properly perforated. Perhaps about 20 years ago, they stopped doing that, and I've opened all similar boxes using the top flaps ever since.
I suspect that these companies just haven't gotten around to spending the money on changing the printing on the package yet.
