Certainly not a door jamb. It goes up, then there's an overhang it looks like that extends left.

It's one of those decorative things people put up, to give it a rustic look. It's a decoration - so thus he's admiring it.

Probably worried about the quality of the wood. That looks like treated pine, which is gravely insufficient for a load-bearing column.
