How the hell can you be told you can't fly the American Flag in your yard???

It's simple really, they say no. You say fuck you and do it anyway, or paint your house like this guy did.

Then they fine you and confiscate your home when you don't pay up.

Homeowner Associations can tell you exactly what you can and can't do with YOUR home.

HOA's are awful. You never actually own your home if you sign an HOA agreement because if you do something they don't like they can fine you and take your home if you don't pay.

Then why sign an HOA agreement and why do they still exist? :)

In areas with an HOA, you have to sign the agreement to purchase a house there. Otherwise they don't let you buy it. These are usually the suburb like divisions you see where a developer buys a huge lot and builds tons of houses that all look the same and have perfect yards etc. Also, practically ever single condo building has an HOA that all the condo owners must be a part of.

There are several reasons why they exist, often it is related to keeping a certain set of standards (grass cut, tell you what you can and can't do such as have a flag pole or certain types of mailboxes, etc). Basically they want to force the entire neighborhood into looking like it came straight out of pleasantville. This is "good" in that it generally keeps property values high, and keeps "trashy" people out. However, it's awful for the exact same reason because you just bought a property and now you can't do whatever you want with it. It basically destroys the entire concept of the dream of home ownership. Basically, if you sign into an HOA, you better have an unbelievably good reason to. And it better not just be because your wife loves the "cute neighborhood".

Lastly, they make you pay dues (again, if you don't pay these dues they can confiscate your house) so you LITERALLY never own your home outright, even if it's completely paid off you still have to pay monthly HOA dues. And those dues can fluctuate at the will of the HOA (the HOA board will vote on it etc).

So in other words...someone would buy into this because never? And HOAs are going the way of the Dodo bird?

Nope they aren't going anywhere. Like I said, a lot of developments have them and you have to sign in order to buy the house there. So if you reaaaaaally want to live there you have to sign.

Also, not everyone gives a fuck about their freedom's like I do.

I actually think it is against the law. Not 100% sure but I think that would fall under freedom of speech and expression. Not only that telling one to not be patriotic of the country they live in should be considered treason, imo

Saying that, the US is the only place I've been where people are almost continuously flying the American Flag.

Seems like Home Owners Associations are decoration nazis. They're pretty hardcore about having everything look uniform and "proper". They probably thought his flag made his house stand out and didn't "fit in" with the look of the neighborhood. It's insanity, frankly. I saw a letter from an HOA telling the homeowner to leave their blinds closed at all times. There was nothing shady going on in the house, they just thought it made the neighborhood look better.

I should have put "their country's flag". Just out of all the places I've been, I've not seen people flying their flag just because. Usually they have a reason (sport)

To be extremely patriotic of the US, you'd have to ignore a lot of the shit that the US have done.

These Homeowners Associations don't just spring this sh*t on people out of the blue. They know what the rules are before they move into these neighborhoods. If they don't like their rules, go live somewhere else. Simple as that.
