Is this true?

Sort of, fag is a term used for cigarettes here in Britain, but we do call them a smoke, a cigarette, a ciggy as well. That said, using fag isn't that stupid considering that its use as a derogatory term for homosexuals isn't its only alternative definition.

I was thinking it was short for "fagot," which is a word for a bundle of twigs or sticks (cigarette).

*faggot ;p

And yes, it's a deprivation of the word faggot, meaning a bundle of sticks. In terms of homosexuality, it was used so they could find each other but not be found by homophobics.

I heard the word faggot came from the bundle of sticks that people used to burn gays with (a long long time ago.) Not sure if that's true, it's what I heard.

I think there are probably loads of different versions of how the term 'faggot' became to mean homosexual. However, it's not that like that in the UK and burning gays at the stake, essentially, sounds like something the English more than the Americans would do way back when so I don't think it is that.

(I go on the grounds that the States seem to prefer lynching to burning, whilst the English were very very fond of burning people.)

Have you never heard of Salem?

I'm aware it refers to Witch trials, but all I have in my head is Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

They burned tons of women for being "witches" when in reality most were practicing simple medicine.

Do you know the extent?

Do you think it can beat Queen (Bloody) Mary? We've had a long history of burning people at the stake; witch or not.

Probably not, but we've burnt our fair of people at the stake too.

Yeah, I know. I still view burning at the stake more British. That, and (traditional) hanging (not lynching) and beheading.

Burning homosexuals at the stake screams something that the UK would do. Hey, but you guys were part of us once upon a time, so they we go. Similar customs and all that jazz.

Allow me to correct the record here:

During the Salem Witch Trials of the late 1600s, 20 "witches" were executed by a fringe group of Puritans.

I'd hardly describe 20 as "tons". Technically, I guess you might be able to describe that as "tons"... if they weighed about 200 lbs each.

I wouldn't say so. Most people here say cigarette but fag is one of the slang words for it too.

A single chip is a chip though. Like a single french fry is called a french fry. Not french fries.
