i always thought the ice in skating rinks was frozen solid and didn't go down that deep.

granted, i've never been to one.

They aren't frozen solid, it's just a flat refrigerated floor with a very thin layer of water frozen on top like maybe an inch thick so it freezes really quickly.

That's how they can quickly remove the flooring to put in a basketball court or concert hall or whatever in the large sports arenas.
