Unsuspecting victims are the best kind. Not to mention most mac users are not exactly computer superusers...

My only question is why this has delayed so long

So as to make the sudden revelation of how many are infected much grander.

I think it's not that mac computers can't get viruses, attackers just don't bother to target them (as less than 10% of users are mac users).

This is exactly correct. But it makes ignorant and obnoxious mac users get all self-righteous that "my computer can't get viruses like your shitty computer can."

It appears a Mac user has seen your message (it's at 0 points right now).

No I'm at 1. The scores always take a second to update so I probably just posted that comment when you saw it.

Its that along with the fact that the coding for MACs are completely different and from what i hear, harder to program in so no one usually bothers trying

Unix based. Very old language. First step for most engineers.

Unix based systems are fundamentally more secure than windows, since people typically don't use the root or admin user for every day computing like they do with windows (so attacks that try to exploit the user's privileges are limited). But Mac OSX has really diverged (and for good reason since usually security and usability have an inverse relationship) from its roots. I do know windows vista was a big step in the right direction for security, and windows 7 is basically vista on steroids. That said linux OS's are the best way to go for security for the average user. I dual boot my laptop with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm not a operating system whiz by any means, and it was pretty easy for me to learn and execute in a few hours. I'd suggest anyone who considers themselves even slightly to be a nerd to do the same.

I love ubuntu. It's funny, growing up I always thought people who used linux for everyday computing (not development or anything like that) were just pretentious jackasses. Especially since all the good programs that I used were on windows (microsoft word etc). But now that basically all computing is done in the browser, the operating system one uses is much less important. I just wish I knew how to use GIMP even remotely as well as I know photoshop...

I know I am going to get down-voted for this, but I still don't get all the hate for Mac users on Lolbrary. I know I'm biased because I am a Mac user, I just feel the music software works better on it. Sorry I'm not sorry I like Macs. better.

It's because Mac users are the Christians for the computer world. Usually very obnoxious and willing to tell you that you're wrong for not thinking the way they do.

In return they get obnoxious non-mac users telling mac'ers that they are wrong for not believing the way they do.

It's a vicious circle.

You know Atheists are like that to right? BUT not all Christians or Atheists are like that. Though a good percentage of both sides are. You need to realise that.

i wish people who commented on this post knew what they were talking about. don't talk about software engineering if you aren't an engineer. not saying its not obnoxious when people think their macs can't get viruses all I'm saying is know what the hell you're talking about. if programming for a mac is so hard why are there so many apps in the apple store? iOS apps and Mac OSX apps are both mostly written in the same language (Objective-C). Yes Mac OSX is based off of UNIX but is still more secure than windows will ever be! PC users are just jealous because instead of paying a premium price for a mac once they have ended up paying twice as much to fix their shitty PC! BOOM!

bartok13 |

Seriously... who pays hundreds of dollars to have their computer fixed? Buying a new one is still cheaper than buying 1 apple.

johosher |
-2-3-4
points | Submitted 2012-04-09 17:55:15

yeah if you don't give a shit about the computer. if you want a descent computer than no. also have to factor in all that time you spend trying to fix it and buy a new one.

bartok13 |

So my argument above is validated... the hatred for apple users comes down to their mentality of "what I use is great and what you use is shit"

johosher |

no dumbass. im saying if you want to spend some money on a great computer a mac is a great choice and well worth your money. but if people don't want to spend that much on a computer and don't care then buy a shitty dell. you get what you pay for.

I honestly don't understand the mac hatred. Apple is taking over the world, I bet 90% of you walk around with iphones.

I don't even use a mac, but I've tried them before and they sure as hell are faster than my computer.

Just so you know, Android's market share utterly dominates iphone.

http://mashable.com/2012/04/04/android-breaks-50-market-share/

Apple is doomed in the long run because they are a closed proprietary system. The only thing apple had going for it is Steve Jobs (who was an amazing visionary), but if apple can't innovate (like it did under Steve's leadership) it won't be able to hold it's market share very long because it is too closed off. Hell the company is already trying to fight a patent war to protect what it has already created. That is basically a cry for help... "waaaaahhhh we can't innovate anymore so we better try to protect the technologies we made in the past etc etc."

where are you shopping? I got my macbook brand new, with everything already loaded onto it, for a little over 1500. Not only that, but when my computer got broken when someone dropped my backpack on to it, they gave me a brand new one for free. My screen cracked once, they sent it away, 2 days later, brand new screen. AppleCare is fantastic. Macs are great too. I had a PC for 15 years, had a mac for 3, and I doubt ill go back. Not saying right or wrong, but dont make us all out to be Mac using, coffee sipping, beanie in summer wearing hipsters.

Catch up? Android already has the largest market share... I'm just saying that Apple's share will shrink in the future unless they can come up with some pretty innovative stuff. Good luck with that without Steve Jobs...

You could try not downloading as much malware, then your pc wouldn't need to be fixed. I don't run antivirus, and I have zero problems, because I use my brain.

it's more about the hardware. re-installing windows doesn't require any money (unless you're retarded and have to take it to geek squad) just headaches so please use your alleged brain and don't post a stupid response.

I buy a PC because macs are terrible for games. You can spend twice as much on a mac and it will still have a lower fps than a PC.

Until macs can remotely play games as well as PC I won't buy one.

I remember doing the OS support for this virus. It was a pain in the ass, but at least I didn't have to walk through any re-installs!
