Technically, what the cars did on the other side of the road was illegal. Even though he was off their side, you are NOT allowed to go across a zebra crossing if someone is on it, period.

Actually, it's a "Fußgängerüberweg" (pedestrian crossing) technically but is also sometimes referred to as "Zebrastreifen" which means "zebra stripes."
