If I'm correct, I believe the popsicle sticks are laced together in a lattice pattern to create the structural integrity, and flicking it like a rope causes the motion to continue like a standing wave, and as the popsicle sticks reach their apex, they come apart.

But how does one get that much loft the whole way through. If you were to do it with a rope, it pitters off the longer it goes. This keeps the same height the whole way through.

I stand corrected, after watching the video below, all he did was pull one stick out.....mind blown.

I'm thinking the lattice pattern bends the sticks slightly loading them like a spring. The sticks at the end then weight the sticks in front down keeping them loaded. I guess the guy starting it isnt flicking them up but just removing his hand that is hloding them down. As the tail lifts up the lattice loosens and the sticks at the end are released making the tail lighter and lifting more sticks and hence continuing the hilarity. Simples

It's really easy..they're just laced together so that when they come out they flick.

I wonder if you used really big sticks in this pattern, if you could make a sort of hovercraft?
