Updated NSFW (Not Safe For Work) Content Rules-thumbnail

We've had a lot of drama recently on The Lolbrary and some things have gotten a bit crazy. While stuff like that can be interesting and exciting, it is important to not let things get out of hand.

My main concern is regarding the overly graphic NSFW posts that seem to be cropping up recently. The NSFW cover is intended to be for funny/interesting content that may be a bit inappropriate in a workplace or professional setting. Marking content NSFW is not an excuse for uploading smut.

Lets face it, these posts are never really that funny, they are only getting upvoted because we're all human and people enjoy looking at naked people. But The Lolbrary is not the place to do that. People come here to view funny and interesting content, and meet a few (presumably clothed) friends along the way.

For those interested in seeing such nakedness, I have extremely good news for you! Studies suggest that ~35-40% of internet traffic is porn related, and ~12% of all websites are dedicated to porn. In fact, you are simply one google image search of practically any word with the safesearch filter turned off from your wildest naked dreams! So you need not fret that you won't be able to see this type of content on The Lolbrary.

Consequently, the following new rules regarding NSFW content will now apply:

  1. Content that explicitly shows genitals is not allowed.
  2. Content that is essentially nudity or of sexual nature hidden behind flimsy humor is not allowed. For example: a demotivational of a topless girl where the caption says "Boobs, Gotta Love 'Em."
  3. Content that shows extreme or graphic violence is not allowed (seeing someone slip and fall down is funny, seeing someone get killed by a train is not).

Content that breaks these rules will be removed, and the user will receive a warning/ban depending on the severity and frequency of their actions.

Feel free to discuss this in the comments.

I'm going through the archive right now and removing all content that doesn't meet these guidelines. Obviously no actions will be taken against users who posted such content before these rules were in place.

Do pixelated-censored pics count as pt. 1?

Those would probably be fine, but please use discretion. Ask yourself, is this actually funny? Or is it just a picture of a vagina with a smiley face drawn on it or whatever.

I was asking because of this, because I found it funny despite the "explicit genitals."

Cartoon nudity is an interesting case. I'm leaning towards removal, but I'd like to hear some people's thoughts on this.

Another good example is the life aquadick post. It has images of penises, but it doesn't feel obscene like the close-up vagina images do, it comes off as silly and humorous. When I think of the word explicit, I think of a feeling of graphic and serious sexual detail.

I suspect we'll end up just dealing with things like this on a case by basis. Obviously, I'm going to use good judgement as well. I'm not going to ban hammer someone who posts something a bit over the line without a few warnings or anything. But the last uncle outhouse post was a bunch of cropped porn pictures, which clearly meets even the most subjective guidelines for explicit.

It was kind of funny, still. I didn't find the Aquadick funny, but also not offensive (cartoonishly drawn penii would've worked just as well).

I can see how my post may not be as funny to others as it was to me, as my judgement of such things is probably skewed to begin with.

Upvote to DeathDark for use of the term penii.

I've decided to keep that cartoon post, though it definitely tip-toes the line I think the animated aspect of it makes it acceptable.

Another example of a post with nudity that I thought was acceptable is the digital bikini one:

http://www.lolbrary.com/post/13920/digital-bikini/

Yes, this has nudity. But the concept is interesting and it brings more value than just being "a hot naked chick herp derp." I don't think the average lolbrarian would see that and think it to be obscene.

EDIT: I'm still up for anyone's thoughts on this.

billmalarky |

Not really. The vast majority of NSFW posts in the archive still meet these guidelines while being appropriately labeled as NSFW.

The rules are by their very nature a bit subjective, so a lot of it comes down to good judgement. Think "I know it when I see it".

Here are some examples of NSFW content that would still be acceptable:

The cat tattoo wasn't funny at all but it was cool. The smurfs one was hilarious! It's not like these two pics were porn. Every normal person knows what porn looks like. It looks like it was made to get you off, plain and simple. Now something with nudity thats blatantly not funny AND looks like it was made to be porn not being allowed I can understand that. The rules should focus more on getting rid of the things that aren't funny while keeping the NSFW tag instead of focusing on censorship. That sounds like an easier task. Not to mention many people myself included find censorship to be offensive. It's not like this is a children's site anyway. In as much there is a high degree of speculation that states hiding things from children is more damaging than showing it to them and having them learn about it properly. But I won't get into that.

I'm pretty sure Lolbrary isn't a place for a child to learn anything about anything, lest they become extremely dysfunctional adults.

I doubt that would happen even if children did come to this site :P Programming children to have closed minds and hiding the real world from them is a big contributor to them becoming dysfunctional adults.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS. It's not the content, it's the way a person perceives it and children need to be taught how to perceive these things.

Yes, society has just as much responsibility to the children as the parents and teachers do.

The ones with cat and dog heads in between a girls legs could be considered beastiality (interspecies erotica). Not to say I don't find them "artsy" and somewhat amusing, but it's a little close to call.

SkyBrigidRain |

Anal, vaginal, and oral with an animal! Thats beastiality. Those pics are just people with animals heads between their legs. It's a bit over the top saying that that is beastiality.

I'm indifferent about the picture your removing, and thereby disagree.

My friend and I were disappointed that a pornographic picture of a woman with cookie monster, and family guy was removed. These new rules that allow for more removed content will then remove all of the funny pictures of tattoos (toothless kitty), or the explicit pictures with props (the landing strip picture).

To rebute your percentages... how many of those are derived towards comical explicit pictures, eh?

dbryant84 |

I agree that the toothless kitty and landing strip picture may be acceptable. There was a certain artistic aspect to those posts. The cookie monster picture was porn stuck into a picture with cookie monster. I get the joke, but it still falls under the category of "smut" as billmalarky has discussed.

Just ban porn. We all know what it looks like since this is an adult site as mentioned earlier. Cookie monster was clearly a mediocre porno chick trolling and spamming the site. She was advertising herself on a male dominant site and playing dumb about it to trick a few into becoming a fan and then just leaves. I'm sure she does it on many sites. This behavior spawns more people to post trash (Uncle Outhouse). At the end of the day it brings down the value and validity of the site. So Bill, let's keep it R-rated. No porn for the sake of porn. Genitals should be acceptable if applicable to and enhance the joke only. If people continue to abuse this then I would understand getting rid of genitals all together.

Is there a grandfather clause? Or will previous posts in violation be removed? I'm just curious. I don't want to look at a certain Goth girl shoving her clunge into the screen on LOLbrary any more than anyone else.

All previous posts in violation have been removed.

As for people concerned that this is going to make the lolbrary "lame" or less funny. Keep in mind that out of the hundreds of NSFW posts, only about 13 were actually removed. I doubt anyone would have even noticed if I didn't make this post, but communication/openness is important.
