You seem new here. From what I guess, you followed Liz here from her facebook or twitter post. Well, I've been here for quite a bit longer, and this isn't just an image library -- this is a community.

Oh, because I'm new my opinion isn't valid? Length of membership determines worth or something? What a prat you are. A community is defined by it's members and I hope the majority here are better examples than you, because you are a grade A dick. How about rather than offering negative, unhelpful and snide comments you offer up constructive criticism to help a new member grow and improve their abilities? You know, how a community ACTUALLY works. This may be a community, but I don't think you have grasped how they work.

When you start with criticism and the person explodes with anger, you have a few choices: get angry, walk away, calm them down, or troll them.

I tried a bit of the calming down, but she didn't want to take it, so I just went with the trolling.

Except it wasn't criticism, it was just trolling from the get go. Constructive criticism is "hey, I see you used photoshop to emphasise the gag, but the edges are sharp. Have you considered blending to soften the edges?" Saying what amounts to "crap photoshop!" is NOT useful in any way, shape or form.

She was kind of spamming us with bad images. I was a little caustic with my criticisms. So what? Is her skin so thin?

Surely, 'bad images' is a purely subjective matter - what one person regards as 'bad' another will love, as is the same with anything involving humans. If you don't like it, why not just pass it by? Why take the time to rain on someone else? Or if you have to comment, why not say "well, it's not to my tastes and there are several technical flaws, have you considered..."

The motivationals were clearly out of proper format, the photo editing was clearly rough, the images weren't close to funny, the text wasn't relevant to the pictures, and it was all featuring the poster.

That's just bad. It's not PURELY subjective. She broke meme traditions trying to sway it in her favor and it didn't work. She needs a professional graphic designer and comedic writer.

You have a couple fair points, but what you have exhibited isn't new to the community naivete behavior, it is more like you are blindly defending someone who is insulting a community and are trying to use your new membership as a shield. That's why your opinion isn't valid, not because we disagree with it.

Well, all she did was post pictures and get some real crap for it. Not constructive criticism but real crap. And as I have indicated elsewhere, I don't like that. So, if people are going to act like that, I deal with them on their level. If people elevate themselves to a higher level, I reciprocate, as you may have noticed above.

Phoenix, I saw some of her first posts, and several people offered her negative, but albeit constructive criticism. It wasn't until later when her posts became self-centered/attention-demanding along with her anger induced comments that people began to give her a hard time. She is getting shit for starting shit, not because people think she isn't funny. That and if someone doesn't like your picture on a website and they aren't willing to give you constructive criticism, who the hell cares? It's the internet, there are legions of trolls who just go on websites looking for fights they can start up. So just calm down and relax.

Quite frankly, I don't care for opinion, I care for facts. If someone acts dicky, I point it out. If someone makes a foolish comment, I point it out. After many years I have learnt that honesty is the best policy, suppressing things never ever helps. All DeathDark has done is pick on the newbie and that is shameful. He offered no constructive criticism, no advice. Just abuse. So pardon me for trying to be a decent human being. I was going to start sharing some of my work on here, but given the attitude displayed so far towards new members, I am seriously reconsidering that.

Phoenix, if you actually spend some time here you will quickly realize that the lolbrary has one of the friendliest communities on the net (for an entertainment site).

You and Liz have let death get under your skin, but I think his main concern is that a lot of liz's posts have been pretty self centered, almost to the point of being promotional. That is what is irking him.

Well, speaking as an admin elsewhere, I never edit posts - I will address and counter the points made, even when they are insults to myself. Editing the post only shows an immature style of behaviour that reflects poorly on the overall community as the admin is a direct representative of the community and what is considered acceptable conduct therein. It also paints a poor image of the admin individual as it can indicate a level of immaturity.

Personally, I find sanctions (removal of posting privileges, temporary bans etc) to be a far more effective response than post editing. Obviously, if a post is especially offensive (ie: racist, sexist, homophobic in the extreme - like 'kill all...') then it should be deleted and replaced with a "removed for..." comment.

Bill's a good admin. He's kind and chummy and gets along with the kiddies.

He keeps the lolbrary as it should be (I even had him delete a post of mine before), and that's all we can really ask of him.

Tell you what, why don't we meet in the middle. You edit your own post, and remove the insults (both to you and me) and I promise not to edit it.

That way, we're both taking the high road. Sound good?

We routinely downvote reposts, especially recent ones, except for Meadock sometimes because it's kind of a running joke that he does them all the time. Usually the joke is only funny the first time it's seen. When you posted yours we had just seen it like a week before. The score on the one you found was so high because it was posted first. That's also why multiple versions of the same picture, like you had a few times, got downvoted so badly. This isn't really like a deviant art thing where we evaluate and critique a joke and help to make it better- it's a pretty simple formula. If it makes us laugh when we see it, it gets voted up. If it doesn't, it gets voted down. If we see it a lot of times, it gets voted down pretty viciously. FYI, another thing that will probably get stuff downvoted pretty fast is bad spelling or grammar, because most of us here are pretty self-acknowledged nerds. We routinely correct badly written things, as long as it isn't obviously deliberate like lolcats or something. Those things, along with the fact that most (though I admit, not all) of the humor here is pretty pg-13, and some of the twat shots were kind of surprising, are the reasons your stuff was initially downvoted so badly. We're also mostly fond of each other, so we do tend to defend the people we already know before we'll do it for a stranger. We really do just come here to look at funny pics and have a laugh, but if you keep calling us "fucking assholes" and the like, you are probably not going to get a lot of love here. That is the reason why your comments continue to get massive downvotes. If you don't really mind posting stuff somewhere where nobody likes you, by all means keep going like you're going. But really, if you just tone it down, we're pretty welcoming of new people. We just aren't fond of confrontation and tend to mass against it when it's presented to us. If you want to be nice, you'll get nice back, but we really don't like mean people.

Most people seem to be picking up on it all right. jhlip and native-babe are the only two I've ever seen that didn't figure it out on their own (no insult to jhlip).

Formatting it like a link should be okay, though, I'd think. In the very least, it needs to be distinguishable from normal text, and the underline is the most efficient method.

I knocked out the new comment reply/edit/delete actions link style formatting this morning and I must say that it looks a lot better. I don't know why I didn't just do that in the first place...

If it still looks a bit weird to you, delete your browser cache and all should be well.

Make it rainbow colors, give it a background shadow, and slant it to the right. You can use css filters :) Also some animation might be nice if you know how to do that with JavaScript...or flash >_>

A shitstorm for the history books sir. That is what happened here. :P

Once upon a time, on the internet site named Lolbrary, there was a Dark Knight, named DeathDark. This Dark Knight would patrol Lolbrary, upvoting and downvoting where necessary, adding insightful comments to certain images and defeating fiendish reposts (except that from Meadock, whom was cursed to forever make reposts and thus could not help his actions).

Then, one fateful day, a new poster arrive. This poster, LizVicious, posted appalling posts, with poor jokes and photoshop skills. DeathDark valiantly tried to persuade this maiden to improve her skills before posting again but, alas, it fell upon deaf ears. Again and again, he attempted to sway the maiden against the abominations she was posting, but, again and again, she refused to listen. The knight realised that the maiden was not interested, so tried to turn her off by usage of his clever wit.

The maiden took offence to this though, and thus attacked the knight back. However, her attack was misguided, and instead turned the Lolbrary village against her.

After a few last posts, the maiden fled.

And they all lived happily ever after - for awhile, anyway.
