A Note From Uncle Outhouse

Shelved by Uncle_Outhouse on: 2012-02-24

Fellow Lolbrarians,

It has become apparent over the past few months that many images posted on this site are, in actuality, reposts. While many of you find it productive to point out this fact to the users who repost images, I dare say it is unproductive. It is highly unlikely that any user will delete a submission solely on the grounds that it has been posted before, nor should they feel compelled to. The reposted image is not harming anyone on the site, and for many users and visitors it may be the first time they have seen the image.

Furthermore, the primary function of this site is to make people laugh; thus, if the person who sees a reposted image finds it humorous, then the image is both a successful and important submission for the site. If you are one of those users who finds it necessary to exclaim that a submission is a repost, please reconsider doing so. It does not improve the site, it does not improve your reputation, you do not personally benefit from it, and your time here could be better spent looking at other humorous images.

Now certainly if an image is posted for the 1000th time, it may annoy you; however, merely leaving a comment that the image is a repost benefits no one. Thank you for reading.

P.S. Sorry for no poop jokes today.

Condescendingly yours,

Uncle Outhouse

Honestly I just think they should check for duplicates before they show up. Would be pretty easy.

has you seen the big list? no one is going to check through a million images before posting just to make sure they don't get hassled by other users on here. the community should be more understanding of how easy it is to repost something. and as i said before, there is no harm done by reposting an image. if you don't want to see an image you've seen before, you have the option to click on another one.

A google image search almost always finds if something's been posted on lolbrary before..

I mean an automated duplicate-search.... come on now. have you ever posted on /b/ and it's already been posted on /b/? yea, like that.

There are plenty of automated ways of doing it. It may be even simpler then one could believe with the advent of Google's Tineye-esque features.

I guess I agree. On imgur for example, reposts aren't downvoted like they are here... but the downvotes and rebukes don't really bother me to the extent that I would make a submission like this. Live and let live! Don't we all love each other here??? ;.;

I have nothing against the users here. One or two I kind of consider to be a dick, but even Meadock is a pretty cool guy (while he reposts like a boss). I'm just a big fan of credit where due, and just so happen to have a number of other traits that allow me to remember it (visual memory, acute memory of useless shit, peeve for hearing the same thing twice, adoration of originality, etc).

just because someone is the first person to post an image doesn't make them deserving of credit for the image. there is very little original content on the lolbrary since it functions more as an aggregator. regardless, there still is nothing beneficial about pointing out reposts.

I had actually had the idea to utilize the fact that reposts occur whether you like it or not, and have some sort of stats page that sums up the number of times an image is posted and possibly sum up each of its votes. It'd be like an all time hall of fame for images.

Oooh I like that idea!

This argument is taking place a number of places, but the admin, billmalarky, is looking in to solutions.

A lot of reposts lately have been from the previous day or maybe a couple days before and thats just sad. Plus using an image from the previous day and changing a couple words doesnt make you original

but it doesn't matter who posts it. the poster is irrelevant. this site isn't about who can be most popular by posting the funniest images. besides, almost none of the content on the lolbrary is original. with few exceptions, it all comes from somewhere else first.

I realize that cuz I go on imgur a lot after this site and see the same stuff. It is a lot different though when its a recycled image from the same site from the previous day. I also agree on the point that if its pretty old that its alright. Like billmalarky said on that other post, I watch movies I havent seen for a while
