correction....EPIC WIN. I hate fools that always complain about reposts.
If person A uploads an image, and then months later person B uploads the same image, and you like the image, who should get the credit for contributing the image to the community?
I call repost off of the idea of "credit where credit's due" -- the same attitude that spawned Copyright laws.
If an image is worth 400+ points of upvote, let them do it on the person who attempted to appeal to our sense of humor first.
This is a constant issue on this website. Like more so than anything else. I'd say a good chunk of all comments centers around reposts. There's got to be an implementation that will resolve this once and for all.
Image searches are resource intensive, though, which tends to be a problem.
This is a complex issue, but my goal for the community is to have it be more "socialist" in the sense that the correct course of action is the course that benefits the community.
For example, if I post something one day, and a few days later someone posts the same image. This does not benefit the community since most have already seen that image (and it gets downvoted usually).
However, if it has been weeks or months since the initial post, there is a benefit to the community. As many new people won't have seen the first post, and additionally, those who have benefit from seeing it again after it's been a while (for example, I like to watch Braveheart about once a year, and many do the same with harry potter and the lord of the rings etc).
I actually am coming up with an idea that will likely solve this issue once and for all, but it is quite complex so it will be a while before it gets released. That is, it isn't just some "rule" or "restriction" that deals with symptoms, but rather it will be a new feature (or rather, way of looking at things) where reposts just aren't an issue anymore.
Valid point. I guess the bickering about reposts is just annoying though. DeathDark mentioned that image searches are resource intensive; does that include your hashing method? Anyway you mentioned a possibility for this is to do the image search and notify the poster that the image already exists and ask if they would like to post anyway. What do you think of that?
Maybe have the post pending while the search slowly searches in a low-resource mode, and if it clears, then it gets up?
I can understand what Bill said, though I can't stand to watch the same movie twice because the path from not knowing into knowing is the best part to me.

Meadock's meathod is actually extremely viable and would not be resource intensive (it would run at upload time). However it only works against exact matches. For example, if you tried to upload the exact same image twice it would catch it. However, if there is even a slight difference, it will not be caught by a hash match. This causes issues as just about any image on the net has many different versions floating around so using this method is mostly just effective against spammers.
Like I said though, I'm working on an idea that solves the issue from the root rather than covering the symptoms.
Is it possible to match an image up to an existing image up to a certain percentage of confidence? Like 90% and then suggest that the the image they are trying to post already exists and show it to them before they confirm their post?
I believe so, though I've not used an RIS in a while.
This is possible, but it can be really difficult.
For example, meme images will often confuse such systems since all the images are extremely similar.
like i mentioned elsewhere, being the first person to post an image does not give you a claim to ownership or credit for the image. your analogy to copyright laws is invalid.
I completely understand where you're coming from but let's be honest DD. This is a place to put pictures (funny/feelsy/sad/meaningful/whatever) on for everyone to see. Most of the time it's not theirs to begin with. If you're going to get downhearted and sad because someone reposted your post on the Lolbrary, and got more upvotes, than...well...there just might be something to go to a psychiatrist about. Don't think I fully support reposting, that's just my side of the story.
