Based on these comments, all it takes for an average person to be confused about someone's gender is a change of traditional symbols like hair length, clothes and makeup. I find that deeply disturbing.

She looks like a girl, but it's not flat out obvious. It takes a good 5 - 10 seconds, and the average facebook user is already writing a comment by then.
