Was it a different generation of Dr. Who? I know this actor is Dr. Who but I don't get why it's the wrong doctor.

Because the Doctor from The Empty Child (2 part ep, btw, and the best one from that season IMHO) was played by Christopher Eccleston. That's David Tennant. I might have misspelled both those names. :/

meh, he's alright. he's brilliant at doing one shot episodes, but when it comes to a continuation they generally suck.

If you haven't already, check out the BBC Series "Coupling." Penned entirely by Steven Moffat. Very funny show, that was.
